Come Out For Play! #Miami-Dade #Parks #Green-space #Health #Wellness

Crandon Park
With the next "Come Out for Play" event set for April 9th at Crandon Park (click here to go to the event page on Facebook), this is a good time to consider supporting your parks system.

Have you ever thought about what life would be without parks?

Remember your family barbecues at Matheson? Or your child’s enthusiasm when he came home after his first day at summer camp or after-school program? How about the memories of your child’s first home-run at his first little league game? Or memories of the long afternoons of golf with your dad on the public course? Do you remember taking your boat out at Haulover marina and going fishing, or spending summers with your family at the beach at Crandon with dad grilling some burgers for lunch? These are just some examples of the countless ways in which parks are a part of everyone’s life in Miami-Dade County.

Continue your memories, sustain the legacy!

There are many opportunities to help support your parks and its programs. By becoming a member of the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade (click here and join the fan page on Facebook), you not only receive great discounts and benefits but you also become part of a “Park Champion” social group that values parks and its benefits and wants to preserve them for future generations.

The value of a membership far outweighs the cost of a membership. An individual membership is $99 and a family membership costs $149. For your purchase you receive discounted services and programs and even get free admission to special events throughout the year.

Want to find out more? Then join us at our next event. Beautiful Crandon Beach at sunset will be the backdrop of The Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade’s second “Come Out for Play” FUNdraiser & Facebook Social, scheduled for Saturday, April 9, at 5:30 p.m. at Crandon Park Beach Cabanas, located at 6747 Crandon Boulevard, Key Biscayne, FL (click here to go to the invitation on Facebook).

This second event promises to be bigger and better than the first! Head to www.mdparks.org to purchase tickets and get ready for one awesome evening of great live music by The Mojo Scoundrels (click here and become a fan on Facebook); dancing; raffles for great prizes; Disc Golf demonstration; and free drinks and appetizers courtesy of Ale House, Novecento Restaurant, and Polar Beer. The cost is $25 for advance wristband tickets purchased online at www.mdparks.org, or $30 at the door the day of the event. Parks Foundation members enter for free but must RSVP at www.mdparks.org to receive their free wristband ticket.

Why help support Miami-Dade’s 263 parks on 12,848 acres? Let’s count the reasons.

Reason #1: Parks Help Kids

One of the greatest healthcare challenges Americans are facing now is the alarming number of kids suffering from obesity.

Not only do parks offer places to play and exercise, your Parks Department’s Fit-to-Play: Health, Wellness, and Obesity Prevention Out-of-School Program helps kids stay safe and adopt healthy lifestyles through education. Children learn about good nutrition habits, stress management, safety, and citizenship, while getting involved in regular physical activity that is actually fun!

Reason #2: And Adults, Too

A significant percentage of our adult population is suffering from stress, anxiety, and high blood pressure. Fortunately, time spent at one of your parks can help people of all ages avoid these potential issues. So if you thought a stroll in the park was just to get some fresh air, think again. It does the body, mind, and soul good.

Reason #3: Mother Nature Likes It

Parks reduce the impact of pollution, help keep the temperature a bit cooler, improve air quality, and help keep your drinking water cleaner.

Reason #4: Your Wallet Thickens

Your parks play a large role in your community’s economy. The parks system creates jobs, with more than half belonging to private companies. Additionally, quality parks attract tourists and new residents and help maintain home values in your community.

Reason #5: You Get to Party

On February 26, a group of park-loving locals gathered at the Ocean Grill at Black Point Marina for the first ever "Come Out For Play" event (click here to see the video). There was great food, fantastic live music, exciting raffle prizes, and beautiful South Florida weather. Did you know Park Foundation members get in free?

Reason #6: Still Growing

Miami-Dade County continues to grow, as do the needs of residents and visitors for a world-class park system. Traditional government funding sources are not adequate to keep pace with the growing demands of our expanding community.
